Ever thought of why the name KAFKA is so familiar? If you’re a fellow Penangite, the name might remind you of a cafe that used to be at the airport, but surprisingly they have no relation at all!
Kafka is tucked at the corner of Flying Club Penang, beside UOB bank near Gurney. The cafe’s name “Kafka” is actually inspired by Franz Kafka, a novelist & short-story writer who loves to drink coffee. It is also an acronym that stands for “cafe kaki“, which means people who loves to hang out at cafes.
Last week, our team went on a little taste test at Kafka, and guess what? The moment we entered the cafe – the cascading, transparent glass and abundance of lushness, we couldn’t help but fell in love with the ambient instantly. The space was previously used as a gym, so they did some refurbishing and voila!
The owners of the cafe – Sharon & Kishen welcomed us at the door with huge grin. They guided us to the reserved seat & presented their customised menu with handpicked dishes that they thought you guys would like.
On the first glance at their menu, they have everything from breakfast to lunch and dinner. If you see a (v) symbol at the side of the dish, those are dishes specially curated for vegetarians. So thoughtful!
1. Cinnamon French Toast (RM18.90) 🌱
First of all, the cinnamon French toast already looks great by itself. The colours of the strawberries and banana just made the savoury French toast look even more tantalising!
Their homemade butter milk and lemon juice is poured all over the French toast to give some flavour to it. You can also add the maple syrup and cream cheese in the two little teacups to your liking.
2. Beetroot Hummus Avocado Toast (RM22.90) 🌱
If you are not familiar with the name “beetroot”, don’t be scared because it is the first time for all of us in the team to try it too! Avocado and beetroot are the epitome of a healthy breakfast.
The beetroot hummus has a very strong scent that came off really quickly, but don’t be intimidated by it. With the buttery avocado, it actually tastes wholesome. The spinach by the side is slightly seasoned salt & pepper, topped with pamerson cheese. Their tomatoes are homemade too, very organic and healthy!
3. Fry Up Breakfast (RM27.90)
As the name probably suggested, everything on this plate is – fried up. The breakfast is a mix of pork sausage & Iberico bacon, sunny side up eggs, hash brown, assorted sautéed mushrooms & blistered tomatoes with crusty rye bread.
Iberico bacon is made from a type of pork that is of its finest quality, imported from Spain. Besides, rye bread has a softer crust than its other kinds, hence it is the best option best option. There you have it – a complete breakfast set to energise you to kickstart your day!
4. Iberico Bbq Spare Ribs (RM57.90)
The top notch Iberico pork ribs imported from Spain, glazed with barbecue sauce & broiled. It is also served with sweet potato fries & corn (my fav!)
The Iberico pork ribs have just the right amount of fatty layers that it makes the pork taste juicy with a tender texture that almost melts in your mouth !!!
5. Grilled Cheese Sandwich With Tomato Basil Soup (RM22.90) 🌱
If you’re in a hurry to fill your tummy, this is a good option as well. The crusty bread is layered with onion & cheese, with the tomato basil soup for you to dip the sandwich.
The cheese is especially aromatic & stretchy that it makes the texture of the sandwich really good. It’s a quick bite filled with all the cheesy goodness – you’ll just want to grab it again the next time.
6. Oreo milkshake (RM12.90)
This is the favourite of our team! The Oreo milkshake is finely blended with just the right level of sweetness. The whipped cream is also their homemade recipe, which adds to the fluffy texture.
It is surprisingly lightweight & honestly, nobody can resist how delicious Oreo is, right? Loveeee it to bits.
All in all, we really enjoyed our dining experience there. We could really tell that they put a lot of thoughts into each of the food they created.
They also used mostly organic food and imported pork to prepare the dishes, so you can be rest assured with the quality of the food. Also, the Bee Goh Moi milkshake (RM15.90) is definitely worth a try too!
Recommended for anyone who likes healthy food that tastes good. A perfect place for a casual hang out with friends or even birthday celebrations. It’s a great cafe that serves honest (organic & real) food in a cosy, quaint setting.
Thank you so much for having our team there, Kafka ✨
